When “independent” Chen Shui-bian controlled Taiwan for eight years, the Japanese right-wing had a “honeymoon” relationship or “best” years with Taiwan since 1972 when the diplomatic ties were broken. A number of visits to Taiwan during these years by famous radical Japanese right-wings, including Ishihara Shintaro, the Governor of Tokyo, is a good example. During the later years of Lee Teng-hui and eight years of Chen Shui-bian, even some Chinese including Lee Teng-hui and officials in Chen’s administration, including Koh Se-kai, de facto ambassador to Japan, openly recognized that the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands belonged to Japan. Chen did not care about the sovereignty of the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands during his tenure. During his tenure, the Japanese coast guard collided with or sank Taiwanese fishing ships surrounding the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands about 16 times.  Moreover Taiwan is obligated to pay 400 Japanese yen to Japan in order to withdraw their ship from the East China Sea to Taiwan. On May 22, 2008, everything changed when Ma Ying-jeou won the election. Immediately after the election in Taiwan, Japan sent its high officials to Taiwan to meet Lee Teng-hui regarding Taiwan-Japanese relations. Right-wing politicians in Japan began to get nervous. The recent collision of a Taiwanese recreational fishing boat made Japan anxious to deal with this issue, fearing the Third United Front CCP-KMT coalition may act against Japan. Some Taiwanese lawmakers publicly stated that mainland China and Taiwan should worth together to claim sovereignty of the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands.
