On the 25th of September, the 97,000-ton USS George Washington, a nuclear-powered carrier of the U.S. Navy, arrived at its new home port, Yokusuka Japan. Since 1973, this is the fourth U.S. carrier stationed in Japan after the Midway, the Independence, and the Kitty Hawk. All carriers are oil-powered. Of the U.S. Navy’s 10 nuclear-powered carriers, the USS George Washington is the only one that uses a foreign port as its home port. Both Tokyo and Washington describe the deployment as a symbol of the strong alliance between the two nations. According to Donald Winter, Secretary of the U.S. Navy, the nuclear carrier George Washington will play an important and crucial roles in watching the moves of the Chinese naval force in Northeastern Asian (Japan News).  Furthermore, according to the Chinese media Mao Zedong’s photo (which Mao made his 1949 famous “Standing up” declaration of “New China” in the Tiananmen Square), has been hanging inside of the USS George Washington.
