An American Proposal/”Chimerica” Save North Korea-I

According to the Wall Street Journal on November 7, 2008 (online edition) the United States made a proposal to China to seek cooperation if 67-years-old Kim Jong Il, North Korea’s leader passes away. For the USA, a power shift in North Korea could send hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing over its borders, and might insecure its nuclear and biological weapons. Washington has sought assurances that the Chinese military won’t cross the Yalu River into North Korea in response to any instability. Nonetheless, Beijing rejected the American idea. The reason is very simple because one of the core principles of the Chinese foreign policy is “noninterference.” Furthermore, the cooperation with US by China might be viewed as the conspiracy from other nations, is not current Beijing’s interests. Leaders in Beijing made a smart move regarding this issue. But, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied such any kind of proposal from the US.
