Three Australian prisoners of war wanted Aso Taro to apology because Aso Mining Company’s Yoshikuma Coal Mine in Fukuoka forced POW to work as slaves. Later Aso Taro became president of company. According to the Australian (24 April 2009) three POWs: John “Jack” Hall, Joe Coombs, and Arthur Gigger “signed a joint letter to the Prime Minister in February requesting an apology for their inhumane treatments and for neglecting the historical truth of their experience for so long.” Aso Taro denied these claims without any substantiation considering that he was only four of five when the slavery took place. In January, however, Aso Taro finally acknowledged for the first time that about 300 Allied POWs including 197 Australians had been enslaved by Aso’s family company.
