East Asian Community-I/Laodicean Politics in Japan-II

Before he took the office, Japanese Prime Minister, Hatoyama Yukio, made a proposal to Asian countries- to form an “East Asian Community.” This was not a new idea.  The Japanese leaders had the same idea a long time ago, probably during the Meiji Restoration. During WWII, the Japanese imperial army executed the idea by launching the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, resulting in a lot of painful memories for people in the Asian region. However, this time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China issued a positive response to Hatoyama’s doctrine. But, the Korean media was relatively suspicious regarding Hatoyama’s motives (The JoongAng Daily 16 September 2009). In September when Hatoyama met the Chinese President Hu Jintao proposing the idea of the East Asian Community” in New York, Hu did not response directly. The Chinese leaders are perhaps beginning to be suspicious about Hatoyama’s idea. Will the East Asian Community be like the EU in the future?
